Čestmír Suška: Outside / Inside
(Inside) 13 April – 3 June 2012
(Outside) 13 April – 31 August 2012
The exhibition SUŠKA: Outside / Inside at DOX Centre for Contemporary Art presents works by the renowned Czech sculptor Čestmír Suška. The focus of the exhibition consists of works from the years 2008—2012, exhibited here for
the first time.
Scultural objects by Čestmír Suška are exhibited both in the interior and exterior od DOX Centre. The collection of perforated and welded industrial tanks and mutations is presented on the terrace and in the yard. The part called Insiped, which presents smaller sculptural objects is exhibited in the DOX Tower.
The idea of working with industrial tanks first originated during Suska´s residence in Vermont in 2005, where he encountered an American variant of tanks for heating fluids in a local metal scrap yard.
“The amateur soon matured into a professional and within three months had created virtuoso elaborate laced structures and had also collected cut off elements as a secondary product, offering possibilities for further use. First of all he composed them in flat installations and
subsequently printed them on paper. Suška exhibited these monotypes, utilising the process of rusting together with objects and cartons, as the triune result of his discovery. It was not long before he began to weld these iron elements back into an entirely new spatial composition, ” says the exhibition curator Magdalena Juříková.
The exhibition concludes a successful project Rusty Flowers, which has been exhibited in art institutions and public spaces in the Czech Republic and also abroad, e.g. Museum of Art, Birmingham, AL, USA (2007), O.K.Harris Gallery, NYC, USA (2008), Sculpture Park of the Johnson State College, VT, USA (2008).
The exhibition continues until 3 June 2012 (Inside) and 31 August (Outside). The part called Inside will be displayed from od 13 June 2012 at Dům umění Ostrava, where it will be enlarged by other works and complemented by an installation in the city public space (Outside II).
Čestmír Suška (*1952) Studied sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts, Prague. In 1980 he founded the art theatre Kolotoc and in 1987 stood at the birth of the art group called Tvrdohlaví, of which he remained a member until 1991. Now a freelance artist, he focuses on
sculpture, painting, graphic art, scenic art and stage direction. He is also the leading personality of the Bubec Sculpture Studio.
