Of Money and Men

12 May 2016, 1:00 PM

Conference on economic alternatives accompanied by the guided tour of the Soul of Money exhibition held at 11 am.

How much money do we truly need? And for what, really?

As new (not only) economic crises arrive, their impact on society and technological advances result in a fundamental change our faith in money and the role it plays. Is money still just a means of exchange, or is it becoming an objective in its own right?

Some current global experiments and initiatives, in reaction to changes in the current economic model, offer – if not a real alternative to an unsustainable economy based on constant growth – at least a very necessary change of perspective. These for example include the concept of the shared economy, where the main focus tends to be on mutual trust rather than monetary profits, or the idea of a universal basic income, which separates financial income from work. Are these tendencies relevant, or is this just a short-lived trend?

These questions and more will be addressed during the conference by several Czech and international economists who devote themselves to these topics. The conference will also include artists participating in the current Soul of Money exhibition, who will present projects focused on the role of money and its flow in society.

The topics and schedule will be updated as appropriate.

The conference is being held within the scope of the public programme to The Soul of Money exhibition.

The conference will be held in Czech and English, with simultaneous interpreting into Czech or English available.
