Material 307

10 Feb – 8 May 2017

The Painting Studio (Room No. 307) at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague facilitated the growth of many prominent artists in the field of painting. Studio graduates include such names as Filip Dvořák, Markéta Jáchimová, Martin Lukáč, Zuzana Ondroušková, Alžběta Říhová, and Jan Zdvořák.
But it is also giving rise to a new generation that is exposing the medium of painting to new challenges. Since 2010, the Painting Studio has been headed by Jiří Černický and Marek Meduna, who together are creating a place for experimentation. Today, paintings are no longer just pictures that hang on a wall; they exist independent of canvases, in 3D objects, in installations. In other words, in networks. Painting is coming out, and above all communicating – with the works of others, with history, with the social context, but also with other media. The primary emphasis is no longer placed on the canvas itself; significance arises within a network of works, thus somewhere between them. The studio is a place where various formal attitudes and opinions meet, their plurality constantly facilitating constant, active discussion. The Material 307 exhibition reveals what forms contemporary painting can assume, and asks what painting means today. The beauty of this question rests in the inability to answer it completely.
