Educational programme from the permanent offer of The Role of Art / Roles in Art for the exhibition Argus & Medusa: On Hope in Dark Times.
Role: “Artist”
What does it mean to “stick your neck out”? What role does courage and the ability to go your own way play in any kind of creation? The works of artists, writers, composers, and others often invite us into their own stories, and authenticity is valued, whether it conveys beauty, joy, or despair. The reaction may be immediate, or it may take time, but the original creator is always sticking their neck out.
The Argus & Medusa: On Hope in Dark Times exhibition tells the story of a 200-year-old painting that is still regarded today as one of the most striking works of art in history. The monumental canvas entitled The Raft of the Medusa (1818–1819) continues to fascinate visual artists and other creators across time, cultures and continents. As a result, the exhibition demonstrates not only how the work sparks the imagination of contemporary artists, but also the way in which it reflects the reality of today’s world.
In addition to an exact copy of the original painting, created forty years after the original, the exhibition offers plenty of vivid and contemporary inspiration for your own self-expression and creative work – each artist brings their own distinctive technique, approach and interpretation of the theme and story; a story of hope.
The educational programme includes various activities, commentaries, discussions and contemplation in the exhibition all with a final reflection.
