Public transport:
Prague is well connected with buses, trams, metros and S-line trains. Public transport is relatively cheap and efficient. The tickets (= jízdenky) are sold at all metro stations, major hotels, tobacco shops and on trams (contactless payment). In Prague, a 30-CZK ticket is good for short rides on the metro, tram or bus (up to 30 minutes), while a 40-CZK ticket covers longer trips and transfers between modes of transportation (up to 90 minutes). Tickets must be validated on entering the system. There are validation machines on buses and trams and at the entrance to metro stations. There are also 24- and 72-hour tickets which cost 120 (330) CZK.  If you get caught by the inspectors and don't have a valid ticket, you will have to pay a fine on the spot (currently 1000 CZK).

Prague's metro system is an easy way to get around the city. Trains run frequently between 5:00 am and midnight. However, there are only three lines, so the metro won't take you everywhere in Prague. Trams are a handy way to get around and cover more destinations than the metro. They also have the advantage of being above ground which means that you get to see a bit more of the city rather than being stuck in a tunnel. Tram 22 is a particularly good route for sightseeing. 

Intervals and routes for trams and buses change with the night schedule which starts at around midnight and ends around 5:00 AM. The Prague metro stops at midnight. When travelling on public transport, please beware of pickpockets! Note that the historic centre is compact enough to walk around.

Travellers cheques, VISA cheques and Euro-cheques are easily converted in major cities. If you are using local foreign exchange offices you should check before completing the transaction that you are content with the exchange rate offered and the commission charges. Most large hotels, restaurants and shops accept credit cards or debit (Maestro or Cirrus) cards. ATMs are connected to the international CIRRUS and PLUS networks. GMT+1, as in Central Europe (GMT+2 from last Sunday in March till last Sunday in October).

Electricity:
220-volt AC. Two-round-pin plugs are used; adaptors recommended for visitors from the UK and US. 

Calling home:
The international dialing code for the Czech Republic is +420. When calling from the Czech Republic, dial 00 + country code + area code + number. The three Czech mobile operators are Telefonica O2, T-Mobile, and Vodafone, and each of them offers simple no-contract SIM cards with 200 CZK of credit which are available for purchase in newspaper shops and grocery stores.

Internet:
Public internet access is available in most cafes, restaurants and hotels and on some trams.

Health:
Emergency medical care (with the exception of emergency dental care) is free for EU citizens. Nevertheless, we recommend that you obtain comprehensive travel and medical insurance before travelling. You should also use the European Health Insurance Card or EHIC.

No smoking:
Smoking is prohibited at restaurants, schools, cinemas, theatres, sports facilities, state offices and most public spaces including tram and bus stops.
