Leaving the USSR: exile or immigration?

Leaving allows for the possibility of return: at least, that’s how we usually think about it. But sometimes people know that return is out of the question – especially when politics is involved. An exile waits for return to be possible again; an immigrant gives up on the idea of return. Sofi Oksanen and Adam Zagajewski discuss this “choice” based on their own experience.

Writing the shaking of the world

A writer always writes about the world around him, in other words about history, in simple terms at least. But some take history as material for their work. How does a writer settle his story in the stream of history? What kind of narrative can he use? Are the stream of consciousness and the stream of history different things
