DOX and the Ponrepo Cinema invite you to a series of summer movie nights under the stars and in the universe of David Lynch with Sunset Boulevard.

The screening will be introduced by film critic Martin Pleštil and David Havas, the
curator of DOX Summer Cinema – David Lynch Season.

“The right setting is extremely important. Take, for example, the mansion in Sunset Boulevard, one of my favourite films. That house, I want to be there! Even today, I find myself driving down Sunset Boulevard and thinking: I wish I could find that house here somewhere and go inside! Somehow I just can’t accept that it’s not possible. I don’t really care about the plot at all – I just love the place where it’s set.” – David Lynch

In 1950s Hollywood, unknown screenwriter Joe Gillis is unable to sell his work to the movie studios. He’s in debt and is considering returning to his hometown. When he gets an offer to ghostwrite a script for a faded silent film star, he jumps at the chance. However, he discovers that a dangerous relationship is gradually developing between him and Norma Desmond (played by Gloria Swanson in a suggestive and almost autobiographical performance).

Billy Wilder’s fraught tale of the artistic ego is set in the now forgotten world of Hollywood studios, an environment that was mythical for David Lynch and never ceased to fascinate him. In a film steadily suffused with cynicism and empathy, the stars of the silent era slowly march past, including a scene with Cecil B. DeMille playing himself. But the fantastic screenplay, full of references for the cinephiles in the audience, also gives Erich von Stroheim a chance to shine as the devoted butler of the unhinged Norma.

In a similar vein, Lynch himself later made a climactic study of Hollywood’s toxic narcissism in what is perhaps his best film – Mulholland Drive – where the forgotten diva is replaced by the aspiring but unsuccessful young actress Betty in a riveting performance by the at that time unknown Naomi Watts.

DOX Summer Cinema – David Lynch Season

DOX and the Ponrepo Cinema invite you to a series of summer movie nights under the stars and in the unfathomable, mysterious, and deeply captivating universe of David Lynch. High-quality headphone sound, views of the Gulliver Airship, and refreshing summer drinks and nine screenings.

The Wizard of Oz

The classic family film The Wizard of Oz contains all the themes that characterise David Lynch's work. Dreamlike logic of the narrative, the presence of supernatural beings, the exploration of new alternative dimensions with different ‘rules of the game’ and the moving musical interludes. The movie is screened in the DOX Summer Cinema on the terrace of DOX+.

Wild at Heart

Youth, passion, obsession, murder – David Lynch’s portrait of the American dream. The movie is screened in the DOX Summer Cinema on the terrace of DOX+.

Sunset Boulevard

A fraught tale of artistic ego is set in the now forgotten but mythical world of Hollywood studios, which never ceased to fascinate David Lynch. The movie is screened in the DOX Summer Cinema on the terrace of DOX+.

Lost Highway

David Lynch's dreamlike work mixes an abstract plane with references to the most idiosyncratic noir films. The movie is screened in the DOX Summer Cinema on the terrace of DOX+.

An award-winning existential comedy drama by the much admired Italian director Federico Fellini. The movie is screened in the DOX Summer Cinema on the terrace of DOX+.

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me

A feature-length theatrical film dedicated to the seemingly familiar story of the fallen angel from Twin Peaks. In this revolutionary prequel for its time, Lynch follows the ill-fated diva on a cocaine-fuelled ride through hell. The movie is screened in the DOX Summer Cinema on the terrace of DOX+.

Lolita

A cinematic treatment of Vladimir Nabokov's famous novel, in which the obsessive roots of David Lynch's paternal yet infantile incestuous parental figures are confronted with absurdly comic and terrifyingly demonic messengers of absolute evil. The movie is screened in the DOX Summer Cinema on the terrace of DOX+.

Blue Velvet

The dark film, which smacks of sex, drugs, and ’60s suburbia, is at times a coming-of-age flick, at times a noir whodunit, and for the most part an undeniably and unexpectedly violent thriller. The movie is screened in the DOX Summer Cinema on the terrace of DOX+.

Persona

From Ibsen, Pirandello and Vertov to Bergman's contemporaries and everything we affectionately refer to as ‘Lynchian’, films full of doubles, repressed sexual tension and the schizophrenic nature of the acting profession. The movie is screened in the DOX Summer Cinema on the terrace of DOX+.
