The Prague German-Language Theatre Festival/Thalia Theater Hamburg: Odysseus – Wandering According to Homer
23 – 24 Nov 2018
23 November at 8pm
What can you do when your mythical uber-father has never been home because he constantly had to excel in various and sundry adventures? At best drag the famous hero home and turn his stories into kindling...
“Few sons, indeed, are like their fathers.
Generally they are worse; but just a few are better.”
(Homer)When Odysseus went off to fight in the Trojan War, he left behind his wife Penelope and his infant son. Now, twenty years later, that son is a young man. Telemachos has never seen his father. He is familiar with the tales of the resourceful Odysseus, but doesn’t know if this war hero is still alive. One day a man appears at the court of Odysseus on the island of Ithaca carrying a large portrait of him. As it turns out, he knows the war hero: Telegonos is also Odysseus’ son. Odysseus had lived his mother, the black magic sorceress Kirke, on the island of Aiaia after she turned half of his retinue to pigs. Together, Telegonos and Telemachos now await the return of this unpredictable man who since he destroyed Troy had been so frequently enticed from his pat.
Together with actors Thomas Niehaus and Paul Schröder, Antú Romero Nunes weaves a tale of the unreliable palaverer Odysseus.
