Educational programme from the permanent offer of ROLE (IN) ART for the Orhan Pamuk's exhibition The Consolation of Objects

role “curator”

The DJ Curator educational programme aims to introduce students to the role of the curator in the operation of contemporary art, highlighting the importance of choice and selection. Against the backdrop of the exhibition KAFKAesque, which provides a specific and original perspective on how the work and legacy of writer Franz Kafka is reflected in contemporary artworks, pupils and students will experience the important role of “selection” in the operation of art. To select means to make a choice, to decide, to determine definitively, which are essential competences not only for artistic practice but also for life in the contemporary world oversaturated with visual stimuli.

Art is not a toy that people have created to keep themselves from getting bored. Art is a specific language and medium that we learn to communicate with throughout our lives – just as we communicate in our mother tongue, we can also speak the language of art, and the curator is a guide who tries to help us find our way. Their choice, their selection, limits us, but at the same time advances us. The curator is the one who has the final word, the one who presents art to the public, who searches for artists or thinks about art and passes this understanding on to others, just as a DJ does with music.

So, as part of the programme, after an introductory discussion, pupils and students will try out the selection and presentation process described above using digital technologies directly in the exhibition in groups. They can then work with the outputs in their own school environment.
