An educational programme from our permanent offer The Role of Art / Roles in Art, connected with the exhibition The Consolation of Objects.
Role: Curator
The educational programme DJ Curator aims to introduce students to the role of the curator in contemporary art operations, highlighting the importance of choice and selection. Against the backdrop of the exhibition The Consolation of Objects, which introduces the world to the little-known art of the famous Nobel Prize-winning author Orhan Pamuk, pupils and students will explore the important role “choice” plays in art operations. For to choose means to select, to decide, to determine – which are essential competences not only for art operations but also for life in a world oversaturated with visual stimuli.
Art is not a toy that people created to keep themselves from getting bored. Art is a specific language and medium that we learn to communicate with throughout our lives. Just as we communicate in our mother tongue, we can also speak the language of art, and the curator is a guide who tries to help us find our way. The curator’s choice or selection limits us but at the same time pushes us. The curator is the one who has the final word, the one who presents the art to the public, searches for artists, or thinks about the art and conveys their understanding to others, just as a DJ does with music.
Therefore, after an introductory discussion in the exhibition, pupils and students will try out the aforementioned process of selection and presentation in groups using digital technologies. They can then work with their output further in their own school environment.
