Show on the map
The showcase of kimonos from the collection of MOMI 紅絹, which focuses on traditional Japanese clothing from the end of the Taishō era and the beginning of the Shōwa period (1920s), will be led by Kumie Holý, a professional stylist who specialises in Japanese kimonos and makeup for art and film.
Kumie will present kimonos based on timelessly refined Japanese aesthetics combined with a wave of avant-garde patterns that were popular in Japan not only in the early twentieth century but also today.
The unifying element of the showcase is the worlds of independent filmmaker, poet, writer, and surrealist Shūji Terayama (寺山修司, 1935–1983) and director Seijun Suzuki (鈴木清順, 1923–2017), whose films are known for their flamboyant visual style, absurd humour, and playful rejection of traditional film grammar.
The collection will give you a glimpse of Japan, with all its natural beauty and the magnificent colours of the four seasons, which have long served as inspiration for kimono designs.
The showcase will be followed by a workshop that will offer practical advice about wearing kimonos as everyday clothing.
The event is part of the accompanying programme for the exhibition GA-I-SU-RA.
