DOX and the Ponrepo Cinema invite you to a series of summer movie nights under the stars and in the universe of David Lynch with 8½.
The screening will be introduced by Tomáš Hubáček, a film historian and critic from the National Film Archive.
“It’s a real shame that most films are so undemanding. Compare that to 8 ½. The first time I saw that film, it was something of a revelation. Everything else was just a movie, but this was a film! Nowadays, a lot of directors are content with just entertaining the audience. That’s really saying something. But ideally, films should be as effective as 8 ½. That is, they should have the ability to evoke a whole new experience for the audience. And that experience should be enjoyable. Whoever can do that is a true master of the screen.” – David Lynch
David Lynch was a great admirer of Fellini, and certainly not just because they shared the same birthday – 20 January. Lynch’s respect culminated in a personal meeting with Fellini, after which he said in an interview: “I feel very close to him, even though he’s very Italian.” How else could Lynch, himself very American (especially with his Boy Scout English), react to meeting a counterpart whose films have become universally comprehensible around the world thanks to their creator’s distinctive signature and flair for sudden mood shifts, from wistfulness to dreamlike poetry to sudden, almost slapstick comedy.
