Jaroslav Brabec (1954) is a well-known Czech cinematographer, director, teacher, screenwriter and repeated recipient of the prestigious Czech Lion film award. His adaptation of Josef Váchal’s “Bloody Novel”, which was released in 1993, probably attracted the most attention. Even older than his interest in film, however, is Brabec’s fascination with the world of fine art. Already at a young age, he got to know some of the prominent personalities of fine art and photography. He gradually decided to document these encounters, capture them in photographs and preserve them. For many years these works were unknown to the general public, appearing sporadically and mostly unofficially. However, a significant change occurred after 1989. Many publishers and artists themselves found images in Brabec’s archive that they subsequently decided to publish. His portraits thus appeared in dozens of monographs, catalogues, anthologies and other publications.
