Novels are like single-person households. What happens when a second author moves in? What emerges is a double novel, a tense coexistence of two stories that both touch and pass each other on each double page. One story belongs to Daniel, whose father is dying, the other to Zuzana, who has left her partner. The only things that connect the two are the apartment they share and the palindromes written on the back of notes. But can’t life be read the same way from one side or the other? Perhaps. Anyway, it’s up to the reader which side they start on. Just beware: What is a game for one person may be a fateful choice for Daniel and Zuzana.

The discussion with the two authors will be hosted by Petr Vizina.

Jan Němec (1981) is the author of the novels A History of Light (2024) and Možnosti milostného románu (The possibilities of the romance novel, 2019). With Petr Vizina he co-authored Znamení neznámého (Signs of the unknown, 2021), a book of interviews about contemporary spirituality. His books have been translated into fifteen languages.

Jana Šrámková (1982) is the author of award-winning prose (Hruškadóttir / Peardóttir), children’s books (Zuza v zahradách / Suzie in the garden; Bratři v poli / Brothers in the field; Fánek hvězdoplavec / Fánek the starswimmer), screenplays (Tony, Shelly and the Magic Light), comics, and theatre.

The event is organised by the DOX Centre for Contemporary Art and the
publishing house HOST.
