The MILKOV exhibition is the largest solo exhibition to date of sculptor
Stefan Milkov (1955), who has been continuously active on the Czech art
scene since the mid-1980s. After studying at the Academy of Arts,
Architecture and Design in Prague, Milkov joined the activities of the
emerging generation of artists sometimes referred to as postmodern, and
in 1987 he was a co-founding member of the group Tvrdohlaví, which
included artists Jaroslav Róna, František Skála, Jiří David, Michal Gabriel,
Čestmír Suška, Stanislav Diviš, Petr Nikl, Zdeněk Lhotský and Václav Marhoul.
The thematic aspects of Milkov's work are set in the world of legendary and mythical figures and phenomena, while Christian themes also appear. Respect for ancient symbols, whose universal validity Milkov does not deny, is often contrasted with subtle irony and humour. Milkov’s later work shows an interest in technological elegance, referring to the age of machines, expressed in an almost aerodynamic morphology and reaching a purely abstract expression.
The exhibition presents a selection of Stefan Milkov’s works created between 1989 and 2024, providing an insight into his oeuvre and its various and often surprising positions. The exhibition is accompanied by large-format abstract paintings, which the artist began to devote himself to intensively in the last ten years and which represent a completely distinctive line of his artistic work. Various forms, various materials. Mini-stories and mythological depictions. Angel’s wings rustling, a broken sun chariot in the desert, heroes on the horizon and the rise of modern civilization. This is the landscape of Stefan Milkov. Sculptures and paintings that demand concentration and reflection. It is not light reading, but certainly worth it.
