Educational programme using Narrative 4 methodologies, excerpts from Franz Kafka's work and visual material from the KAFKAesque exhibition

Since the invention of writing, text and image have been among the most important means of conveying information and extending memory. Before the internet, the most common medium for this memory was the book. And the book is the perfect vehicle to convey stories. Through text, images, one or the other, as well as the space it offers. But let’s turn the page.

Narrative, as used by the international Narrative 4 project and the educational programs from the DOX Center’s Story Exchange series, allows us to experience sharing stories with another person in a way that seems simple at first glance - I listen and retell. And in that simplicity there is power. Colum McCann, world-renowned Irish writer and founder of N4, has called this concept “radical empathy” and it helps people find understanding wherever they experience life differently and see the world from a different page.

The experiential programme is based on the participants’ own authentic stories, and authenticity is essential. The personal story, a childhood experience, should be on the theme of “transformation” and no longer than 5 minutes. And because it is meant to be shared, each participant can decide whether to choose a sad, happy, serious, or light-hearted story. Participants prepare the story in advance.

Being able to see things from a different perspective proves rewarding on all levels. So in this programme we also relate to the world of contemporary art - using visual artworks from the KAFKAesque exhibition and excerpts from the work of this extraordinary writer. Getting to know others and ourselves from a different page.
