The unbalanced representation of women in creative and decision-making roles in the audiovisual industry has long been pointed out by researchers or policy-makers. However, the medium of virtual reality remains unexplored from this point of view: who has the opportunity to use it as a means of artistic expression, and to whom does this art form remain inaccessible? Whose stories can we get to know through films in VR, and who is their audience?
Using the metaphor of the glass ceiling, which usually refers to the impenetrable barrier preventing women from gaining decision-making power, this curated selection explores the position of women in the world of VR. The section Beyond the Glass Ceiling consists exclusively of projects created by women and proves that their artistic position in VR is strong, also thanks to the novelty and experimental nature of this medium. The selection of 12 projects is thematically devoted to women's stories and experiences and underlines the stylistic and formal diversity of women's approaches. However, we are also interested in what is happening on the other side of the headset, on the side of the audience: statistics indicate that women are less likely to own VR headsets and are less willing to try virtual reality in public. This thematic focus is therefore also an effort to make VR accessible to the widest possible audience and to prove that technology has no gender.
The project selection presents women's work as something that cannot be firmly defined or put in a box. Projects from four continents thematically address issues related to physicality (menstruation, pregnancy, body representation) or gender-related inequalities faced by women (sexualization, reproductive justice, violence against women). In the same spirit, it also addresses broader social issues such as the housing crisis, parenthood or coping with death. We invite you to immerse yourself in the interactive worlds of women and explore their virtual creativity.
